On December 18th 2004 my favorite episode of the animated series Justice League Unlimited aired, “Wake The Dead”. The episode was written by Joaquim dos Santos and Dwayne McDuffie and stands out in my mind as one of the finest of the entire series.
“Wake The Dead” (while ostensibly a kids show) is an incredibly poignant and emotionally intense episode. There is the standard full throttle JLU action to keep the kids interested, but in the end Hawkgirl is left to make a very serious decision, one that will have a profound impact on the lives of many characters in the JLU universe.
McDuffie and company really hit the heart strings hard with this one (and while handling it with kids gloves so to speak) and don’t shy away from the really intense emotional exchanges that take place in the episode. There really is something special going on in this series, and this episode in particular really highlights the complexity of the issues and situations they addressed throughout the series.
If you are an animation and superhero fan, do yourself a favor and check out The Justice League/ Justice League Unlimited series. Hell check it out even if you’re not cause the show is one of the best to ever air honestly and is far from just being a silly kids cartoon. McDuffie and company make this show something special and every episode shows just how damn much they cared.
