Loston Wallace  /  “Justice League Plus Four”

I was hired by DC Comics’ Licensing Department to draw kids books in the late 1990s. I worked on both BATMAN ANIMATED and SUPERMAN Animated Series books for DC, and had a blast! I enjoyed learning drawing in the Bruce Timm “animated style” for many years. Here is a JUSTICE LEAGUE commission that I pencilled and inked several years ago around 2003 or early 2004. At that time the JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED cartoon had not yet aired, and there were only 7 Justice League members. The client requested that I include Supergirl, who had appeared on the SUPERMAN ANIMATED tv show, and Aquaman, who had recently debuted on the JL show. Oddly enough the client also requested that I add in Harley Quinn and Catwoman! I thought it was kind of an odd request, considering that those two gals were villains. Bu when it comes to drawings someone’s personal commission, an artist has to try and please the customer. I didn’t really understand why the characters should be included, but I wanted to make them happy, so BAM! They were added.Regardless of the odd roster line-up, it was a fun commission to do! I enjoyed laying this one out, and I tried to give each character there own unique and dynamic pose. This illustration was inked with a Raphael Kolinsky #3 brush, using Speedball Super Black India Ink. I hope you enjoy it!Loston
