I’ve really have a love/hate relationship with modern costume designs. Sticking with DC, Nolan’s Dark Knight costume works because of the context of the movie. The modernized costumes in the Watchmen, on the other hand, (along with the slow motion, breakneck editing and the if-you-think-about-it-it-makes-no-sense ending) I felt really undermined the message of the work.
I’m not even going to talk about the Green Lantern.
But with the new Superman, with his perfectly folded cape, his super-old-school “S” and his newly minted bling-bling Aquaman scales, I’m left confused. Why add more colors to a painting that’s already finished? I suppose it’s generally accepted that spandex can’t be flat anymore. But why? Is there demand to see every thread of shiny mesh? It’s silly looking in any context and when dealing with Superman, it’s kind of like taking a Bedazzler to the American flag.
As for the production team behind Man of Steel, it’s making me skeptical. I’ve been let down by Superman Returns, so I’ve learned to not get too excited about anything Superman related. It’s not because I’m a Christopher Reeve fanboy and it’s not because it doesn’t adhere to my ideas of what Superman is, it just seems that people living in a post Dark Knight Returns era forgot that sometimes superheroes smile, laugh, and do good just to do good. And if there is a movie equivalent to that mentality, Zach Snyder personifies it. This makes me sad.

This, from balls to bolts, does not look like Superman and quite frankly the outfit if fucking horrible. And also everything that Riser said times ten.
